London - As a Tourist
Whenever I have friends from abroad come over, I always recommend the open top bus tours. They give a good overview and for 24hrs you can hop on and off depending on what caches your eye.

The British Museum is another suggestion as is the tour of the Tower of London as even if they aren't hugely interested in History, most love looking around a Castle.

My question to you good people, is apart from the big tourist attractions what hidden or maybe not so hidden gems would you suggest to a tourist visiting?

Can't beat a walk all along the south bank from Tower Bridge to Westminster when the sun is shining.

St Katherine's Dock also popular with tourists.

Number 15 routemaster from Tower Hill - normal bus fare, travel in an original. Used to go all the way to trafalgar Square past St Pauls. Not so sure now but well worth doing.

Southwark Cathedral is really nice, especially if anyone's into Shakespeare as there's loads of tributes to him there. Next to borough market too.

I know people take the piss out of it but the cable car is really good as a one off, especially if you have something booked up at the O2. If not you can hop on the riverbus from there to Westminster Pier. its a normal public service but one of the blokes always sits up top and talks you through the scenery. £7 per person. Really good way of seeing London

Another vote for Southwark: Borough Market for grub, street food, a pint, the Globe theatre for Shakespeare, Tate Modern, Design Museum, river, walk to South Bank etc. Then pop down to the Oval for some T20.

I would suggest a visit to the bits of London not so commonly found on the London Tourist Trail...

Dulwich Picture Gallery and Horniman Museum
William Morris House
Syon House
Turner's House in Twickenham
Merton Abbey Mills

I could go on...

Greenwich by Trafalgar Tavern and Cutty Sark pub used to be my favourite but they are a bit too polished these days but a tourist probably wouldn't notice!

Re: London - As a Tourist
The three big museums in South Kensington which are totally free to visit. All the massive steam-powered machines that made this country the industrial giant it became and the first train in the whole world.

My favourite story about the Science museum is all about the first aeroplane, the Wright brothers' Flying Machine. The American government created a prize for the first man-powered plane and the Wright brothers claimed the prize. There were a number of other claims to the prize, one of which crashed shortly after takeoff that they thought had technically been 'controlled flight'. A German immigrant even said he'd been the first two years before the Wright's and it was reported in the local newspapers.

It was always disputed in America whether they'd actually been the first and in 1928 the Wright's got the hump and gave their (now world famous) plane to the Science Museum in London who displayed it as the world's first heavier than air, controlled flyer.

During the Second World War it was kept in South Kensington underground station's tunnel because of the Blitz (if you look at the side of The Victoria And Albert Museum in Exhibition Rd you can still see chunks taken out of the wall by bombings) and in 1948 The Smithsonian finally admitted the Wrights were the first, took the plane back and gave us an exact replica. It's STILL disputed to this day though whether the Wrights made the first controlled flight in a plane.

We didn't learn THAT at school!

Personally I'd go on a massive pub crawl of all the historic pubs, craft bars and breweries across London. As you do it you get to see all the stuff in between and as you get more drunk you appreciate it more.

I always do this first any any new city I visit.

Walk through the park to Camden via Primrose Hill and the Regents Canal followed by lunch and a couple of pints with a mate at The Oxford Arms the other Sunday. Even Armie’s goal vs Arse helped things along especially as we left when their second went in. London’s a beautiful European city, didn’t you know?

I'm taking the lad to a T20 game at the Oval in August. We will be going to the Imperial War museum first, then a couple of pints.
